Congratulations Matija on winning the Rowland Hill Award for best student presentation at SIMS 23 in Minneapolis! Matija’s award-winning presentation was entitled ‘“Effects of Reactive Gas Cluster Ion Beams on Yields and Matrix Effects in SIMS”
Nick gave an invited talk at the 14th International Symposium on Atomic Level
Characterizations for New Materials and Devices (ALC’22) conference in Okinawa, Japan. The talk was entitled ‘Improved bioanalysis using GCIB SIMS and laser post-ionisation’ highlighting recent progress in fundamentals and applications of ToF-SIMS.
Nick gave the Keynote Presentation in the Mutimodal Session of the 42nd BMSS Conference in Manchester in September. The talk was titled ‘Multimodal Mass Spectrometry and Optical Imaging of a Neuroinflammation Model‘ and showcased our collaboration with the Medicines Discovery Catapult and colleagues in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.
Nick gave an Invited Talk at the UKSAF meeting at the Henry Royce Institute hub, entitiled ‘Advances in ToF-SIMS using massive gas cluster ion beams‘.
The group were well-represented at the 22nd International Conference on SIMS in Kyoto. Danielle, John Medland, Alex and Nick gave presentations.
Record attendance at the ‘SIMS and related techniques’ meeting SISS-17, Seikei University, Tokyo. Nick gave an invited talk on the subject of our recent Analytical Chemistry paper.
Well done to Afnan, Giles and Jo for their contribution to the final year PhD talks. All three did very well. Jo was awarded second prize in the MIB session!
Alex gave a presentation entitled “It’s good, but it’s not right!…” How to validate your model at the UK Surface Analysis Forum‘s (UKSAF) Workshop on Multivariate Analysis held at the University of Nottingham, 8 January 2014.
The purpose of the workshop was to introduce users of surface analysis technologies to multivariate analysis with a combination of theory and demonstration.
The presentation covered validation of multivariate models, how to get the most out of them and how to avoid various pitfalls in the data treatment. The slides for the talk can be found here.
At the recent SciX Conference in Milwaukee USA, Jo walked away with not one, but two awards for best poster! Both the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS) and the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) judged Jo’s work on “ToF-SIMS and Raman microspectroscopy as tools for probing lipid saturation in acute myeloid leukaemia cells treated with a novel combination therapy” to be outstanding and awarded her certificates and cash.

Nick gave an invited talk on Imaging Biosystems using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry to industrialists and academics at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London, organised by the Joint Pharmaceutical Analysis Group and The Drug Metabolism Discussion Group. The title of the meeting was ‘New approaches in bioanalysis and analytical toxicology’.
Alex gave an invited presentation at the Joint IAEA-SPIRIT-Japan Technical Meeting on Development and Utilization of MeV-SIMS held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 21-25 May 2012.
The meeting was to determine the scope and prospects for the emerging MeV-SIMS technique and the outcome was very positive.
The presentation covered factors that influence the form of a Static SIMS spectrum and various issues that may arise in its interpretation and can be found here.
We held a very successful MassSpectrometry@Manchester symposium in the MIB focussing on Data Analysis.
